While creating my third bird nest I found out that:
1. Gluing each piece together does not work
2. Stacking the materials together then gluing makes it easier to create the bird nest itself
3. Figuring out how to glue them all together after stacking the materials together is the new problem
4. Continue to figure out how I can use honey to hold the nest together
5. Straw/Hay and dried leaves is an easier material to work with than twigs
be sure to make photographs, drawings, and notes about the construction of each nest. these will be useful later.
ReplyDeletedon't worry so much about honey (or other glues) now, focus on construction/weaving, materials.
an interim project could well be a book or other compilation of —
(1) images/diagrams of your nests (even and perhaps especially failures),
(2) captions and discussions of those,
(3) passages from your readings on animal architecture, and the first "houses" (e.g., as discussed in Joseph Rykwert's On Adam's House in Paradise, The Idea of the Primitive Hut in Architectural History), and
(4) your own ruminations about design, intention, accident, learning (from mistakes).
